Feedback Regarding China Tour Experience ( Feb 28-7 th March)
I recently travelled to China with SOTC Travel, and unfortunately the trip did not fully meet my expectations.
The snowfall in Beijing created major difficulties since most of the itinerary was planned around outdoor sightseeing. As senior citizens, the extremely cold weather and slippery conditions due to snowfall made it unsafe for us to walk around. We could barely stay at the Lake Palace and the Olympic Stadium for more than a few minutes. Travelling for over an hour by bus to reach these places, only to leave almost immediately, felt like a waste of time and energy. Given the slippery conditions, we simply could not take the risk.
When I raised this concern with Amit and asked why we could not be taken to an indoor place instead, his response was that he had to follow the itinerary strictly. I agree he had no choice but follow the itennary, but then he asked me, “You tell me where should I take you?” Frankly, this is not the kind of response one expects from a seasoned tour manager. Customers expect guidance and practical solutions during difficult situations, not defensive replies.
In such situations, I strongly feel there should be a Plan B. Weather conditions are unpredictable, and tour operators should be prepared with alternative indoor options when outdoor sightseeing becomes impractical or unsafe, especially for senior travellers. Such contingency plans should also be communicated clearly to customers in advance to avoid inconvenience and dissatisfaction.
Similarly, the fountain show in Xi’an felt like a poor use of valuable time. Considering that we were in Xi’an for only one day, it was surprising that such an activity was included in the itinerary. That valuable time could have been utilised for more meaningful sightseeing.
While Amit mentioned that SOTC would not have grown to this level if the planning was not good, I believe that no organisation can simply rely on its past reputation. Travel planning needs to remain flexible and adapt to changing circumstances and traveller expectations.
That said, I would also like to acknowledge that the food, hotel stays, and bus arrangements were very well organised, and those aspects of the trip were handled efficiently by Amit. He was always on time, or even before time, to oversee the arrangements.
I hope SOTC Travel will take this feedback constructively and consider improving flexibility in itineraries, especially when unforeseen situations like extreme weather arise. I would appreciate your response and assurance that such concerns will be addressed for future travellers.
